Tears of Rage. The Story of Richard Manuel - Documentary film fundraiser
I’m always talking about how the amount of musical talent in this town never ceases to amaze me. Well that’s a bit misleading! Because, I continue to be bowled over by the wide variety of exceptionally talented artist we have on offer in the Pdot. Filmmakers for instance, you don’t hear a lot about the local movie industry, probably because you could hardly call it an industry. That doesn’t mean there aren’t several really talented filmmakers among us. Just take a trip to Have You Seen at the corner of Aylmer and Charlotte. They’ve got a whole local film section! Not something you would expect from a town this size…unless you we’re already familiar with our vibrant arts culture.
Take for instance my friend Jeremy Kelly and his partner Jason Jeffrey. They’re recent grads who will be screening the “first draft” version of their documentary Tears of Rage at the Spill on Tuesday night. It’s a documentary that tells the story of Richard Manuel from the legendary The Band. Richard Manuel is probably the least heard about member of the band but the way Jeremy and Jason tell his story, you’ll wonder why someone hasn’t done this sooner.
This is a film that actually started as an incredibly ambitious school project that eventually grew into an obsession that took them on the road to the state of New York and California among other places. Now they’ve got some fairly big deal movie companies interested in their work and who knows what other possibilities. They’ve got a way to go before they consider their film complete. Interviews lined up with the likes of Garth Hudson, organ player from the Band, John Sebastian, a friend from Lovin’ Spoonful and members of Richard’s immediate family are in the works but going back to Woodstock to do these interviews isn’t going to be cheap. So this film screening on Tuesday night is actually a fundraiser. Tickets are $10 each and that will not only get a sneak peak at the documentary but also live entertainment from the band Tarantuela and a first look at their new music video also created by Jeremy Kelly. I’m going to be the MC on Tuesday night so I’m hoping for a full house. See you there!
