Washboard Charlotte Finally Has Her Due

Wednesday, February 25, 2009

...as in street.

The City is finally going to resurface that incredibly sad piece of Charlotte Street west of Aylmer. This should have been done years ago.

I agree that now is not the time to do a major repair with the massive re-development of the Charlotte Street corridor coming in a few years. Why fix it, then rip it up again?

But a temporary re-paving is not only the right thing to do, it should have been done a long time ago.

For years I have been rattling apart the front of my car.

For years I have been almost knocked off my bicycle due to the shocking deterioration of the pavement that has been left to sink into the old streetcar rail ties below.

For years I've been wondering why in God's Green earth doesn't somebody throw a load of asphalt on this stretch, until it can be fixed properly.

I agree with Deputy Mayor Clarke...there are greater priorities, and the economy is hurting. Some things have to be left undone, or underdone at this time.

But not this, and I disagree with his opposition to it. This stretch of road is more than an embarrassment. In my view it is unsafe, and has been for a very long time.

Ask anyone who uses Charlotte Street, and happens not to drive a Cadillac with high-end suspension, and they'll all say the same thing.

There is pavement in need of repair, and then there is Charlotte Street just west of Aylmer. It's more than in bad shape. It's nuts.

Applause to council for doing the right thing, and at last approving a repair.
