Survivors set their sights on Peterborough

KRUZ FM's Paul Laing at the Dragon Boat Festival press conference this morning.

For all the ribbing the Lainger takes from us about spending more time on the fairways than at the station, the truth is he's very involved with the community events such as The Dragon Boat Festival.   This morning Lainger MC'd the Dragon Boat Festival press conference at Lansdowne Place.  Pete Dalliday was there too and snapped this photo.

This year, Peterborough will host 2 festivals - the community event on June 5th followed the next week by the International Festival.

My good friend Lisa Deck will be in town for the International Festival.  She and I worked together in radio in Regina back in the mid-80s.  Lisa later became a popular morning show host in Saskatoon and also did a stint at a country music station in TO.  However Lisa's life took a shocking turn in her 30's when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.  The prognosis wasn't promising at first.  I flew out to Saskatoon to visit her.  As I was wrapping up my visit to return to Ontario she said she was afraid we wouldn't see each other again.  I feared the same.   But the good news is that  my friend has been very blessed and is now a 10 year breast cancer survivor.  She's not only a survivor, she's a doer.  Lisa's annual golf tournaments and radiothons in Saskatoon have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for breast cancer research.

I'm so happy she will be here in Peterborough in June.  Lisa and her friend will stay with us during the International Festival.

Stay tuned to KRUZ FM.  I'm planning to have Lisa do some telephone guest spots on the morning show during the weeks prior to the Dragon Boat Festivals so you can get to know her.

Peterborough, get ready for a few emotional weeks in June.   You're going to see what true survivors are made of.
